Well, this was certainly much easier than my last attempt at this peak using the crazy bootleg trail from the east.
The "herd path" is essentially a full blown trail just about up to the subpeak 0.3 mi. below the summit. Steep, but with generally good footing. Above this point, the route becomes a more "traditional" herd path -- narrow, brushy, rough, and littered with blowdowns (with a couple of jungle gym sections to contort yourself through). It is still very easy to follow though. There are several side paths as mentioned above. These are all brushed in so if you stay on the main path you'll get there. Junction with the top of the bootleg trail is obvious. Canister easily located and both a newer and older sign are still present. Excellent view of the slides on North Twin from the side path off the summit.
The path passes through some beautiful birch glades which will warrant a return visit in the fall. Didn't think we'd see anyone but two other folks were also there today. We also encountered a snake on the path who was just beginning to ingest a frog. Very cool to see. Well, not cool for the frog. Sorry, buddy.
Very humid air today but the wind helped a bit. Light showers accompanied us all the way down. |
