This is mainly to report a significant logging operation on the west side of Carr Mtn. Trail, which has been going on since 2020. Private land has been extensively logged all the way up to the WMNF boundary, 1.0 mi. from the end of Clifford Brook Rd.
On the whole, the hiking trail has only been lightly impacted, but the landscape here has significantly changed. The area has not been entirely clear cut but is very thinned out now. Beyond the spur to the falls, the old logging road that the trail follows has been improved for logging equipment traffic and is very muddy in places. There are other logging roads branching off but as long as you stick to the main road, you'll be on trail. After crossing into the WMNF, the conditions immediately improve.
I didn't go all the way to the falls, just far enough to measure the logging impacts. The first 300 ft. of the spur trail has been affected. |
