Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Whiteface, Mt. Passaconaway, NH
Trails
Trails: Blueberry Ledge Trail, Rollins Trail, Dicey's Mill Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, June 12, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at 715a, and on our return at 445p. With many on the trail today, I suspect the Ferncroft lot filled up.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only one, along lower Dicey's Mill Trail. A round log can be used to cross. I skipped that and went across the rocks and fallen logs. With low water levels, this was not a problem.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Nothing to report in this 12 mile loop. Some of the best maintained trails I've hiked. No erosion, very useful steps along Blueberry Ridge & down Dicey's Mills. Exceptional work by WODC to keep this rugged area well-maintained.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Several happy looking pups, some of which completed the scrambles up Blueberry Ledge. I would only take experienced hiking dogs up there, and leave the less experienced or elderly dogs home.
Bugs
Bugs: Minimal in cool early start, black fly rave at both peaks and lower Dicey's Mill. Some mosquitoes joined the fun.

Comments
Comments: I've been mentally planning for this hike for a long time. What a day. We found trails in exceptional condition and completely dry -- there is probably 100ft of damp trail in this 12 mile route.

Excellent maintenance helps many of the miles pass faster, and the ridge walk is pleasant on clockwise descent.

I'm not excited about heights and was concerned about the scrambles. In the dry on this perfect day, I didn't think they were bad. The scramble section is strenuous, but short, and the right hand and food holds seem to appear. Focus on core strength and you'll get yourself up. I would not use this route for descent, and would be very careful in wet, but some do without issue.

Many are fast. I am not. Completed in about 9 hours, with 8 hours moving time. Time for a beer.

Whiteface #25/48, Passaconoaway #26/48. See ya'll out there, I've got more work to do.
