Gale River trail was pretty easy going. First 2.5 miles was easy-moderate. Miles 3-4.6 required more rock hopping, but nothing difficult. Trail was mostly dry , with a few wet spots. Frost Trail was a quick moderate (15-20min) hike to the summit of Galehead. Twinway Trail to the summit of South Twin is a jumble of rocks and boulders the whole way. It took an hour to go .8 miles. Nothing technical, just a lot of moving rock to rock. The summit views on South Twin are spectacular! One of, if not the best in the Whites. The trip over to North Twin along the Spur is 1.3 miles long. This trail has many muddy sections. Although, we cou;d manage to get around most of it. A few more rocks would help preserve the trail. It was a fairly easy-moderate hike with some elevation loss and regain to the summit of North Twin. It took about 45 minutes each way. A couple of nice lookouts from North Twin. We backtracked down from South Twin and stayed at Galehead Hut. Even though online, it showed the Hut was booked, we were 2 of the 3 people that stayed overnight, with a great dinner served, as well as a filling breakfast. The staff was exceptional. If interested in staying at a Hut, its best to call the Reservation Line, rather then trying to book online. Its seems the online system is a bit skewed at the moment. |
