Trails: Upton Road, Purgatory Brook Trail, Wah Lum Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 6, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There are four ways to get in here. We took a kind of long way. Upton Road is a dirt and gravel road that ends for vehicles near a private rifle range. Very friendly people, didn't mind us parking (as long as you don't block the gate), and wished us a nice hike. The other entrances put you near different falls, you can check before hand to see what's best. According to the Mont Vernon website, some have limited parking and fill up quickly.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No brooks to cross, but there is a flooded area on the trail. Some one put some logs down. It is better to use those logs than to bushwhack on the edge of the other side (unless you like getting the tweezers out or the tick key).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Good signs, informative kiosk, thanks! Maybe that wet area could have some bog bridges.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Should be good. Did not see any.
Bugs
Bugs: A few mosquitos. A tick got a hold of Prema, which we were able to remove.

Comments
Comments: Had a morning commitment and it was a hot day, so we chose this. Followed the good directions to the Upton Road area given in the New England Waterfalls book (you should have this!). Upton Road Trail had some wide puddles, no big deal. a pretty walk down to the Upper Falls end of the Purgatory Brook Trail. We went as far as Middle falls, and seeing that to continue would add 5 miles round trip we decided to save that for another day. The Wah Lum trail looked interesting, it promised a viewpoint according to the sign. The map showed Purgatory Brook Trail as a possible return to the Upton Road, but it seems someone was bought that area and there are no trespassing signs all over, so we retraced our steps. Saw two salamanders and two snakes (one looked like it just had lunch - its middle section was swollen).

Plan to go back and check out the Lower Falls. Thank you, Mont Vernon conservation!
