Goal for today was to visit the two glacial cirques on the south side of Hancock’s east ridge. I left the Hancock Notch Trail just after the height of land in the Notch and took a bearing for the western cirque; the plan was to pass under the cliffs of Juno Peak, but tight woods pushed me further east. In general the woods were very scrappy and usually dense, with very little variability. After 1.5 hours, I reached the western cirque, which has a tiny pond on its floor and a small slide on its headwall. Very remote feel to this place. From here I contoured east, again through tight woods, until I reached the large pond on the floor of the eastern cirque. Views were much nicer and more expansive at this pond. I headed south to the somewhat dry beaver pond which had an abundance of Rhodora shrubs, easily the highlight of the day with the background scenery. The return whack was just as bad as the approach, but I made it out before the temps got too high. A great day visiting these bucket list places. |
