Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Lookout Ledge, NH
Trails
Trails: Sargent Path, Vyron D. Lowe Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 22, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There's room for one car, maybe two if they park very close to each other, at the Randolph Spring trailhead for Vyron D. Lowe. There's no obvious place to park right at the start of Sargent Path, but there's a small pullout a little bit east that can be used. Durand Road is very bumpy with a lot of frost heaves - don't go too fast.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No major blowdowns that I can remember. A few mudpits on Vyron D. Lowe. All signs are in place.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Make sure they can handle very steep climbs, as the upper part of Sargent Path is very steep. And keep an eye on them in the vicinity of Lookout Ledge - there are some sheer dropoffs there.
Bugs
Bugs: They were a constant presence the whole way, and we wore our headnets the whole time.

Comments
Comments: After finishing the loop over the Crescent Range from Pond of Safety Road, we headed over to Durand Road to redline these two trails. Sargent Path is very steep in places, and the footing isn't always great - it can be gravelly in places, so be careful. The steepness and humidity and our tiredness made that climb a difficult one. The view from Lookout Ledge was hazy but still very good, and we could see the remaining snow in King Ravine. We can't wait for it to melt, since we have big plans there this summer!

Descending Vyron D. Lowe was much more pleasant. The trail has easy to moderate grades the whole way, and the footing isn't too bad. It's fairly well blazed, but there are still a few areas that are somewhat indistinct, so follow the trail carefully. There were a few mudpits and more water crossings than we expected, but they were all easy.
