Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Moat Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Moat Mountain Trail, Red Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, May 20, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Mostly empty at Diana's Baths early this morning. Upon return, I was surprised the lot was only about half full on a hot day.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water levels are very low right now. None of the crossings were an issue.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One minor stepover on MMT below the crossing of Lucy Brook. One tree down on RRT with a well-beaten herd path around it. Both trails have significant erosion in places and widening / bypasses around scrambles. Noted two short relocations on RRT: one is around a tricky scramble and the other is around a wet slab.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Carry enough water. Once you get away from the brooks, there's nothing.
Bugs
Bugs: Yes there were. The lower elevations were buzzing with thousands of mosquitoes. Pretty brutal, especially when stopped. Those went away as I ascended, but were replaced by black flies at the summit. Unfortunately, there was barely any wind today.

Comments
Comments: Hazy, hot, and holy mosquitoes on this loop today. Up MMT and down RRT. Both of these trails are very dry with little mud and virtually no water. Hopefully the weekend rains refresh things a bit.

An absolutely stellar day for this loop. I hadn't done Red Ridge in several years and had forgotten just how beautifully open it is. Views were hazy but still spectacular. Also a very quiet day up here with only four people and one dog seen all day.
