Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Chocorua, NH
Trails
Trails: Brook Trail, Liberty Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, May 18, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Only 3 cars on a Tuesday in the big lot for Liberty and Brook trails. Anyone with a low-lying vehicle should drive very carefully on the one-lane dirt road leading to it, as there are some big rocks and depressions where you will scrape your undercarriage.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: no problems
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Liberty Trail could use brushing, and it is badly eroded in many places; signs and blazes on both trails are old and fading, and cairns near the summit are few and small (it's easy to make wrong turns, especially just above and below the trail junction)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: One very happy dog joined me part of the way coming down Liberty
Bugs
Bugs: No problem except for mosquitos and gnats at the trailhead.

Comments
Comments: Much of the Liberty Trail is an old bridle path, with some parts heavily eroded (rocky and/or muddy), making for tedious hiking. The Brook Trail is much more interesting and pleasant, on the whole, but if (like me) you don't like ledges, you may want to try another route entirely (Piper Trail?). The ledges (near the top of the trail) are not as extensive or as exposed as on some 4K peaks, but one or two of them are rather steep and slippery (from dried pine needles, among other things), and I wouldn't want to be on them in wet or icy weather, and especially not going downhill.
