Trail is wide open with no issues end to end. Nordic_Gal and I took out two blowdowns along the ridge and she taught me a great new technique to save some effort on some bigger diameter obstacles |

A FINE day in the forest! It's been a spell since Nordic_Gal and I teamed up and our original plan was a delightful bushwhack idea to summit Waumbek that we put a feather in. She wanted the best pizza north of the Notches (Jefferson Country Store) and I just couldnt turn down replacing those calories so I obliged. Trail is in superb shape as mentioned above. Virtually snow free until the last 100 vertical feet of both Starr King and Waumbek - this includes the ridge. More or less avoidable. Of note, a lone Jack In The Pulpit, ascent right after the well (first one I have ever seen!), a virtual carpet of spring beauties (both hues), trout lillies, trillium errectum (burgundy). The spring was flowing, the summit cairn seems to be growing. For those who think Waumbek has no views - there is a stunning view about 100 feet past the summit. Ran into John and Pepper along the ridge and had a brew at Iron Furnace apres hike. A fine day indeed. |
