|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Several, all easy. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Small blowdown in the beginning, right after the first water crossing. Lovely new signs in some places, thank you. Some one has either edited or defaced (depending on your perspective) the South Peak sign where it reads .1 mile. They carved a .2 over it. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw one enjoying her day. Lower part of the trail has several streams; you should conserve water for them for the higher sections. |
|
| Bugs: |
Black flies out in the lower elevations, but not biting...yet. TICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
|
| Lost and Found: |
There was a pair of binoculars in a pouch hanging from a branch on the spur trail. Asked around, no one claimed them. Looked like a high quality pair, so I did not want to leave them exposed to the elements. Contact me if they are yours and if someone would like to mention them on other sites you may. I feel badly someone lost such a good pair. Returning good karma for the time a thru-hiker brought my cellphone down from Moosilauke. |

Let's get the dumb stuff out of the way first. Use your federal insurance and your many hours of sick leave and fix those damn knees before you try trails like this! Don't spend $$$$ on spikes and leave 'em on the pack because you think the monorail may end a few feet later. It won't.
Original plan was to reach Moosilauke, check the time, and if workable make a nice loop of Benton and Tunnel Brook back to the car. Too slow and was only up for the day. Bothersome knee made travel even slower than my normal. But what a great day! Weather was perfect, flowers in the lower elevations were beyond beautiful, many pretty streams. Open fields at the start were pretty. Sign for South Peak says .1 mile, it seemed longer. Then, as we were looking over at the main attraction, I thought it looked more like 9 miles than 9 tenths of a mile. Didn't want to deal with more snow and a bad knee, so we just sat and enjoyed South Peak. Not only is it a worthy destination in its own right, but it is on the Trailwrights 72 if you are interested.
Was surprised that we had the Glencliff Trail to ourselves all the way up. It's a nice trail and it was a good day weather wise. Saw a few people on the way down. |
