I connected to the SW base of Bald Mountain via some Forest Service roads and bushwhacked the length of the 2.5-mile ridge up to West Tecumseh; I found the ridge to be mostly open and very enjoyable woods until around 3,400 ft. Noted some nice quartz deposits, as well as an ancient-looking cairn on Bald Mountain’s summit. (This particular mountain is somewhat obscure and is sometimes referred to as a Thornton peak, but the summit is well within WV town lines). After some thrashing I reached the Mt. Tecumseh trail and connected over to Tecumseh’s summit, which was standing room only; there were discontinuous stretches of soft snow along the trail. Leaving the summit ridge, I followed the Dickey-Tecumseh path over to Dickey Mountain, tagged Welch and then descended Dickey via the bootleg path on the west side; I then bushwhacked up Cone Mountain from the north and descended back to the car. Fun loop hike and a great day to be out. |
