Barebooted Rocky Branch Tr. to Engine Hill cutoff/bw. Very wet in places, but lovely birch glades with sheltered views. Dropped down to cross the river at about 3200' as we planned to continue bw up to the col just north of isolation via the Iso Xpress. Hit rotten snow around 3600'... which eventually became unavoidable. Davis Path had a stable monorail with some rocks showing in places; used light traction (worn rock spikes were just fine). Summit was bare. Due to rotten snow on the Iso Xpress, we used the Davis Path and Mt. Isolation Trail on the way out (which per usual, was more like a brook than a trail). The northern most (5th) crossing was easy. At the 4th crossing, we peeled off SE'ly on the Engine Hill bw. Had a great line, thou it got wet and muddy as we approached the Rocky Branch Trail. Great day in the woods with Neil S.!
FYI... we met a hiker on the summit who came over the Glen Boulder Trail. While his ascent was fine, he found the Davis Path to not be consolidated and he post-holed considerably on his was down to Isolation. |
