 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Elwell Trail from junction of Welton Falls Trail to Bear Mtn had many blowdowns and deadfall on the trail - some had had branches cut away but most did not. Around 3 or 4 required off-trail routing to get around. I am not exactly sure where they were all but they were pretty evenly distributed along the ridge.

I picked up the easy stuff but, this section of the Elwell Trail often looks abandoned in the spring.
The route up to the ridge is well-marked until it hits the skidder road and then becomes not very obvious (you go to the right a few hundred yards) and then the blazes appear off to the right, below the skidder road. Also, under the power lines, the prickers are low this time of year, of course, but, way was not that obvious.
I think this is my favorite route up Bear - it avoids the scrambly sections on the other side. Very pleasant mossy stretches of trail. Nice outlooks at the summit. Around 4 miles RT, about 1000' vert. |
