Light Traction was adequate but necessary once I started climbing East Osceola about .5 miles from Greeley Ponds junction. Monorail held fine under my weight on the Ridge. Micros are all that is needed to Osceola summit for an out and back.
Put snowshoes on once past Osceola Summit, probably slight overkill for the actual trail (only a tenth or so of walking) but once I broke off for the bushwack to the right (west) where the Osceola Trail turns left (south) they were proper footwear for 95% of the out and back to West. A few exposed ledgy areas facing south or east were bare mossy/exposed branches and needed to walk carefully on but easily doable.
Took a poor line to and back through the Osceola/Middle Osceola col--might not be a good line there--very tight Spruce glade to walk through for a few hundred yards. I tried near(ish) the middle of the top of the col and then a bit to the south on the way out. I guess maybe try a bit further north once you see it getting thick--no apparent herd path in this area that I saw and was a moderate fight to get to Middle.
Middle to West much easier (especially coming back). Seemed to be a herd path that follows right along the ridge with a few sections of blowdowns to wander around and just step back to the center of the ridge or highpoint area of col.
Canister on Middle is on the southern edge of the plateau. Canister on West is easily found on the hardpath that leads directly from the east facing viewpoint. Both looked newer, firmly in place and in great condition.
Dreary day that started off wet. View on West Osceola is awesome. |
