The road was gated when we got there, but somebody cut the chain that morning and several people had driven up. The road was clear but the ranger re-gated it around the time we arrived (and told us what had happened), then unlocked it so the others could get back out. We just had the poor timing to be there at the exact wrong window and had to walk the extra five miles. No idea if it's gated again now or not, but the road was clear all the way up. |

There were several small, easily hop-able brooks and snowmelt streams, along with one bigger stream with a fallen tree that served as an excellent bridge. There was only one very wide stream that posed a problem. There was a potential rock hopping path but it was fully submerged, and the was water moving swiftly over the rocks, making an attempt a big risk for falling in completely. My hiking buddy and I stripped off our socks and shoes and waded through--the water was up to mid-shins, moving fast, and icy cold. |

After the road walk, the first half of the hike was very easy and mostly flat. There were some remnants of a monorail, but they were narrow and melted almost to nothing. After the elevation kicked in around 2000 ft., the trail became snow covered. My snowshoes stayed on my pack the whole way up because the path was so destroyed by the post holes and collapsed sides that it was too narrow for my clumsy, snow-shoed feet. I did use my micro-spikes for traction because it was icy in some spots (just wet and sticky in others). My hiking partner bare-booted it the whole way up and down without much problem--all the possible post-holes have more or less been made, and now it's just a matter of not falling into them. Between the false summit and the summit, somebody shat on the trail. Not cool, y'all. Seriously, there are miles of woods. Pick a spot that's not literally in the middle of the path.
There were gorgeous 360º views from the fire tower and some excellent lookout spots on the false summit! Beautiful hike! |
