Comments
Comments: Trail was snow/ ice free up until just a little bit above the Bald Peak junction. Spikes went on around 2700' and stayed on for the duration until I got back to that point on the descent. Some ice down low, changing to mostly snow up higher. Less traffic overall on this trail so the trail bed remained fairly firm for both ascent and descent. Areas of water running under the trail and water running alongside the trail midway up. Once on the ridge, snow was much softer / mushy, but base held up and no postholing as long as you stayed on the track. Rock ledges coming off of North Kinsman heading to South were bare. South summit was also free of snow and ice. On the return trip, I thought I might have to put the snowshoes on once back up and over the bare ledges to North but although the top few inches of snow was mushy, the trail bed under remained firm so spikes stayed on for the way down. There was lots of foot traffic behind me though, so not sure how the ridge fared as the day wore on. Beautiful day to be out there today!
