Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Very easy rock hops. Water low for April
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Tons of blow downs on Brook Trail between Bickford intersection and Bee Line intersection. Looked like someone cleaned up a few of the really large ones in the last few days with a chainsaw. Nice work! They must have run out of gas because there are a good number of saw-worthy trees remaining on the trail. All easy to walk around or over
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Left Fin at home due to anticipated sketchy Brook Trail conditions. Even in dry conditions I would only recommend these trails for an experienced trail dog who is comfortable with steep rock slabs/scrambles. Saw two dogs coming up Liberty. One was going to have a great time, the other was a leashed overweight lab who was going to suffer
Bugs
Bugs: Flys eventually made an appearance on the summit (regular flys not black flies). They seemed to favor me-I guess I must smell like sh*t

Comments
Comments: South side of Chocorua is open for business! Brook Trail was 99% free of snow/ice and was mostly dry down low. trail report from 4 days ago is obsolete-everything has melted and no traction necessary. Liberty Trail has more snow/ice but never considered wearing my spikes-all avoidable or easily navigated. Summit cone is dry. shared summit with one other hiker from 8:15-9:45. Usually spend no longer than 15 minutes on a summit but it was an exceptional morning with no bugs, no wind, no clouds, warm weather (shorts and tee shirt entire hike), and endless views. Couldn’t believe no one else was up there. Other hiker Britt reported rough conditions on Champney-rotting snow and ice, with some crotch deep post holing in spots. Also said he had to slightly submerge feet on water crossing. West side trail looked like covered in foot of rotting snow so saved it for another day. Of note:we heard a turkey calling near the summit, which was highly irregular according to Britt who regularly shoots them. Took an embarrassing amount of time to find the Liberty Cabin spring spur trail. starts immediately behind the cabin on the right side. Three directional signs on way down. Water source was running hard. Spur was trail #400 on my redlining quest. A+++ day in the mountains!
