Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All of the dozens (I literally lost count) of the water crossing are rock-hoppable. The water levels are VERY low for April. Best spot to cross at McCrillis is still where the guide says it is, about 30 yards upstream.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is in great shape overall, and drier than it has any right to be in April. The middle section by the Pond is a bit rough, but I believe it's a relocation so that would explain why it's not as good as the rest of the trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Dogs will have absolutely no water issues here. We crossed a brook or stream every 5 minutes for 4 hours straight.
Bugs
Bugs: Mercifully none. But I did see one or two flying around at one of the crossing...they are planning their revenge.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Great day to do the Flat Mountain Pond loop. Weather was perfect, no bugs, and it wasn't busy at all. There's some soft spring snow left over from the drifts around the pond, but nothing you'd need traction for (though we had spikes just in case). No monorails. The shelter looked to be in fine shape, as was the campsites overall. If you want to get out to this trail this year, do it right now. It is much drier than is normally is, and combine that with no bugs yet, and you can't do better than right now. I imagine this trail is hell in May/June when bugs are in peak shape, as under normal non-drought conditions, there looks to be water all over this trail. We biked back after ending at the parking lot for Flat Pond/McCrillis, which in May is the best parking lot in the Whites, as its full of butterflies and ferns. If you do the loop, do it clockwise, as the road-walk/bike at the end is mostly downhill in that direction.
