Before the snow/monorail begins the trail was surprisingly dry. The remnants of the monorail beginning at about 1 mile. Put microspikes on at 1.5 miles for the duration back to that same point. Monorail was solid and traction was good. Did not feel any need to use snowshoes, but carried them regardless. Above tree line there is a lot of exposed ground. At elevation below tree line there is still 2' to 3' of snow.
With the warming temperatures I could feel the difference in the snow between the time I ascended and descended. Although it was stable for the whole hike this morning, it is probably a good idea to bring your snowshoes.
Saw a moose in downtown Wentworth on the drive very early this morning. Reminded me of that TV show Northern Exposure. |
