Comments
Comments: We barebooted up the dry, snow free road from the parking area 1 mile up Ravine Lodge Rd to the lodge. As soon as we passed the lodge there were areas of snow & ice but we didn't put on spikes for about 1/2 mile. On the way down we left them on all the way to the lodge. The bottom of Gorge Brook has sections of melting snow and wet rocks but was not very muddy. It doesn't take long to have a solid packed snow base and it stays that way until you reach tree line. At tree line we took our spikes off since it was mostly bare rocks with patches of snow & ice between the rocks. It was easy to stay on the rocks and avoid the snow. We did not need snowshoes but we started very early so it's possible that they might have been helpful once temps warmed up.
