Near the gated Caverly Rd. off King's Hwy. in Middleton. Note posted signs about not blocking the adjacent driveways. I met one of the neighbors who didn't seem to have an issue with me being there. |

A bit of grand tour of this peak, which has been on my to-do list for a long time.
I followed Caverly Rd. past the gate to a four-way junction with Caverly Mountain Loop Trail (signs) and turned left, heading up to the peak clockwise. At the top there are fantastic ledges looking out over the Big Lake and to the Belknaps. From there I followed an ATV path east to an excellent view over Merrymeeting Lake. From that outlook I followed a very obscure herd path along ledges with views about 0.1 mi. to the mostly wooded true summit (newer looking sign). I backtracked to the first ledges I had reached, then continued down the loop trail, turned right onto a logging road (signed as a "steep shortcut") which took me back to Caverly Rd., which I walked back out.
Mud was everywhere on these trails except for the upper ledges and some sunny areas. Caverly Rd. still had one long stretch of avoidable ice.
This was a really interesting peak, but I wish access were different. There's lots to see and explore on the flat top of the mountain. |
