I barebooted Zealand Rd then put spikes on until I got back down to the road. I was the first up since yesterday's snow and there was 1.5" of light fluffy snow down low with 3.5" near the summit. There was a solid base underneath but today's temps were well below freezing so I didn't need to put on my snowshoes but you will want them if it warms up. There was plenty of snow to cover all rocks (except at the river crossings) but I still wore an older pair of spikes. That was fine on the way up but I did slip in 3 places on the way down due to some ice beginning to form underneath the new snow. It wasn't enough of a concern for me to switch to newer spikes even though I had them with me but if I were going again I would start off with my sharper spikes. |
