Four of us headed to Carter Notch Hut. Two had snowshoes, two didn't. After the junction at 1.9 mile mark the snow was soft and full of postholes. If you stayed right in the center of monorail you might not posthole too much. At the top of the ridge where the trail heads down to the hut in 0.3 miles, we called it a day. Hut is closed anyway. Heading down, we could not help but produce spectacular postholes and falls. One of us was able to avoid postholing wearing snowshoes. Another changed back to spikes from her snowshoes. It was just exhausting. There were already multitudes of postholes so we just added quite a few more. Yes snowshoes worked if you were proficient at using them. If not, you can posthole with snowshoes, too. The hike was arduous, but more fun than usual. |
