 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Appalachia had a bunch of open spots in the parking lot when I arrived around 2:30 - there were also lines of cars along the road. Castle Trailhead was partly icy and partly muddy and wet - it hasn't been accessible this winter, but by this afternoon the berm at its entrance had melted and softened enough so that my friend's RAV4 could get in. I wouldn't recommend trying to get a low-clearance, FWD vehicle into the parking area just yet though. |

This was a quick redline of the Presidential Rail Trail between the Castle Trailhead and Appalachia. Parts of the rail trail were just mud, while other sections still had a little bit of snow and ice. No traction is needed since the rail trail is flat and smooth. Despite the warm temperatures, the snow had been packed down sufficiently by snowmobile use that we never really sank much into the snow.
The three miles here brought me over 50% in total miles on the redlining spreadsheet. It's been one heck of an adventure so far - can't wait to do the other 50%! |
