Trails: Church Path (Randolph)
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 21, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There isn't really any official parking for this trail. The dirt road that leads to the water processing facility is plowed, but icy and slushy, so I didn't try to drive my car down it. Instead, I just parked on the side of the road at the corner of Randolph Hill Road and this dirt road. Since my car was there for less than an hour, it wasn't a big deal.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There's no sign for Church Path on Route 2, and currently the only parking there is along the road. The sign for Church Path off of Randolph Hill Road is facing the opposite direction from what an arriving driver would see - but if you turn around at the 90-degree turn on Randolph Hill Road and then drive back toward Route 2, you'll see it on your left.

Comments
Comments: I finished my redlining in Weeks State Park a bit early and had some time before I was meeting a friend at Appalachia, so I decided to redline this short trail. I had a little bit of trouble finding it - luckily, a very nice couple who were walking along the road were able to point me in the right direction. (Thanks so much!) I walked down the dirt road toward the water treatment facility, until the path diverged right off the road. (Look for this turn carefully.)

Having just hiked around Weeks State Park, which is north of Randolph, I expected the snow conditions to be similar - low snow depths with some ice. However, I was completely wrong - there was actually 2 feet of soft snow on the trail, and since it isn't used much, there wasn't much of a monorail. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to bring snowshoes, and my spikes didn't help much, so I ended up postholing most of the trail. I apologize to the good people of Randolph for postholing your trail - I'll try to avoid doing that in the future, and I really like your town!

Not wanting to posthole the trail again going in the other direction, I walked Route 2 and Randolph Hill Road back to my car. The whole thing took less than 45 minutes.
