| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The unplowed parking lot for the Castle Trail was melting quickly but still inaccessible for most high clearance cars, so I parked at the large pullout on the south side of Rt. 2., 0.3 miles west of the Castle trailhead. No issues with parking at this spot, and there were four other cars there when I returned. |

| Comments: |
From the Rt. 2 pullout, I made a short bushwhack to the Presidential Rail Trail and then connected to the Castle trailhead; snow depth was around six inches at the trailhead and 3+ feet further up the valley, making snowshoes a necessity. I followed a few tracks for the first half-mile, but after that I did not see any recent evidence of others ascending to the ravine floor. I found adequate snow bridges for all stream crossings, though this will change significantly over the next few days. Switched to crampons at 3800ft so I could navigate around the headwall, and then went and checked out the wide path of destruction from the 2010 avalanche, very impressive! Overall a great day exploring this less popular ravine. |
