Comments
Comments: Beautiful spring day up and down the Kinsmans. Man... these are some rugged trails, even with a deep snow pack. Elevation gain is not to be underestimated here. Hiked all the way up with micro-spikes to both peaks. Probably could have used snow shoes but didn't feel like strapping them on. Don't miss the EPIC view past the summit of South Kinsman, I promise it's worth the extra few hundred feet. There is another smaller cairn marking it with a lovely flat rock chill on. As the day got warmer and the sun did its job, the trails got really messy. We switched to snowshoes the entire descent because the snow was full-on mashed potatoes. Saw many people falling and posthole-ing wearing only spikes. Would NOT suggest crossing the lake at this point unless the mountains get consistent below freezing temps. Saw a TON of people crossing it so we decided to cross it on the way back and was glad to safely get to the other side because there were inches of slush and water indicating significant melting. Totally gorgeous day out there!
