Started out on the Harriskat trail in bare boots but at the first height of land we put on our microspikes: the monorail was well-packed and icy in spots. Thumbs Down was flat at first then started climbing pretty steeply once we passed John's Pond. Trail was snow covered. The spur trail to the summit was a sheet of ice for the initial steep stretch. Views were great; ledges were dry. Back down to Thumbs up which was pretty much a packed powder monorail with about an inch of spring snow on top. Skatutakee summit ledges were pretty much clear. Cadot trail steep but not as bad as Thumbs Down or summit spur plus this side of the mountain gets a lot more sun so not a lot of snow or ice for much of the way. In the valley, the Cadot trail follows an old woods road which varied between snow and stretches of dry leaves and one section that was muddy and streamlike. Roadwalk back to the car was flat or downhill while on Old Dublin Road; King's Highway was a bit of an uphill slog to the parking area. Beautiful day and warm temps! |
