| Comments: |
We started out in spikes, thinking the cold temps would keep the trail frozen, but the snow and icy crust was soft and had some give to it, so we switched to snowshoes after one mile. Evidence of prior snowshoe travel for about 1 1/2 miles, then it disappeared into a layer of a couple inches of unconsolidated snow as we approached Willard Notch. Kilkenny Ridge Trail was easy to follow the spruce corridor for the first 0.2 miles, then we just set a bearing due south for the summit, sometimes on the trail, sometimes off the trail, but always in open woods in 3-5" of powder. We stayed in snowshoes for the rest of the hike, saw no one else all day. Beautiful day to bid adieu to winter, thanks to Whiteout Jeff for a great hike/bushwhack. |
