Comments
Comments: Flume Slide Trail up, and Liberty Springs down. This was a nice change from the saltines Liberty Spring approach. Flume Slide Trail seems to be a bit of the wild west in the sense that you really don't know what conditions are going to be like. The trail was in decent shape for the most part, but there were postholes that had a thin layer of snow over the top that kept me on guard after I slip in one. FST has some great steps kicked in place, but where the steps are lacking I had to take my time and dig my front points in. I finally saw the hikers that were in front of me and just as we popped out above the treeline a gust of wind pinned us where we stood and then brought me to my knees shoving me over a small tree, the wind was ominous but didn't last long. Between the peaks, there was some light drifting. From the LST junction, someone had used a sled or maybe there was a sledding party, in any case, the trail is rockhard with more hidden postholes. Once the sledding tracks ceased the trail has a good base and is littered with postholes but mostly off to one side. I carried snowshoes and worn crampons, my only regret is that I didn't bring my whippet because it really would have come in handy. Great day in the mountains!
