Haystack Rd is well packed by snowmobiles to the FR304A junction. Easily barebootable in the hardpack. Switched to snowshoes at the FR304a junction. 1-2†of new snow last night covered the herd path. Snow had a hard crusty surface that occasionally held my weight. I snowshoe post holed to various depths once every 15-20 steps at lower elevation and every 40-50 steps above 2500 feet. Was able to navigate most of the great route chosen by predecessors. I lost the herd path in several places through mostly open woods. The route traverses a couple knobs with directional views towards Hale and North Twin. Snow laden trees and 3-4 inches of fresh powder at the summit. I was able to open the canister (it opens from the top, twist and pull, no unscrewing). No recent entries. I would highly recommend this route, just follow the snowshoe post holes. |
