Comments
Comments: Spikes were fine from Lincoln Woods all the way to Black Pond where the bushwhack was soft and already postholed by a bare booter who had struggled for 15 minutes or so before turning around, presumably in the warmth a couple of days ago. I added to a few other snowshoe postholes on my way across to Franconia Brook Trail. FBT is in good solid shape with the exception of some postholing when I veered of the center of the treadway. Brutus was soft and I produced a few more holes. The upper trails were solid. As I was descending Brutus I encountered a friendly dog and its owner who informed me that he had beat up the softening Black Pond Bushwhack and perhaps I should consider taking the FBT back. I came across only one other hiker today. Not wanting to compromise another trail, I opted to return via the Black Pond bushwhack and continued to further trash that trail. BEWARE: The bushwhack is now a mess and with tonight's below freezing temps will be a difficult and possibly harmful journey. Consider using the alternative route instead, although I can't attest to the integrity of the Franconia Brook crossings.
