Unknown Pond Trail was almost completely unbroken, especially further along. There as a group of three that set out around the same time I did and they had micro-spikes but no snowshoes. They kept post-holing and floundering around in the deep powder, and I don't think they finished the hike. I switched from my spikes to my snowshoes less than a mile in and it wasn't bad that way. There were almost no blazes and the hike was basically a bushwhack on the second half of Unknown Pond and most of Kilkenny Ridge to Mt. Cabot, so I just followed the singular set of prints ahead of me. There were a lot of false trails that dead-ended and meant I had to backtrack, and I missed the cutoff for the Horn completely. There were no views from the Buldge or from the summit of Mt. Cabot, but some by the cabin. Kilkenny Ridge from Mt. Cabot down, Bunnell Notch, and York Pond to the parking lot were all well-packed and easily doable with only light traction. |
