I hadn't done this loop in a long time -- eight years or so -- and it was nice to revisit it.
The day stayed cold enough so all of these trails remained solid. SMT up to the junction with the spur to Jennings was a smooth sidewalk, as was the spur trail itself and DBT. Beyond the spur junction, SMT was rougher and less traveled, but still solid. Off-trail snow is very deep, perhaps 4-5 ft. Beware of many pokey branches at eye level. Light traction was perfect today, but snowshoes will be needed as temps rise and the snow pack softens. Evidence of old traffic on Smarts Brook Trail and no traffic on Algonquin Trail, as expected. It looks like someone tried to boot down Bennett St. Trail then thought better of it.
A bluebird day out here today with enhanced views from the summit of Sandwich due to the deep snow. I had both peaks to myself and only saw one other person who was headed to Fletcher Cascade. |
