| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The lot is plowed but icy. Parking can get "creative" here -- don't be the person in the Jeep who partially blocked the access road. Also be prepared to take your dramamine, secure the hot beverages, and strap in the kids and pets for the frost-heaved rollercoaster that is the Kanc. When I returned just before noon, cars had spilled out onto the highway, some parked over the white line. |

| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Downes Brook is solidly frozen and easily walked across. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
One blowdown fell lengthwise in the trail at the first switchback. This tree has a blaze and an arrow sign on it. For tall hikers, watch out for a head / eye-poking branch when re-entering the woods past the SE outlook. Ask me how I found it. |

| Comments: |
Unlike the Kanc, the route up to Potash was a smooth, bulletproof sidewalk for most of the way. Between the crossing of FR 511 and the point of entering the conifers, there are some postholes off to the sides, and this section had also softened slightly on the way down due to the sun and a group of buttsledders. No issues on the steeps to the summit. Light traction car to car, so get it now if you don't want to use snowshoes. Next week will be a different story.
A bluebird day on top with some wind, but overall not too cold. With the full parking, I only saw a few people here; Hedgehog must have been very busy. Nice to meet Tara and Stephanie at the summit. |
