Snow of varying consistency the whole way. We started in snowshoes and were very happy with the decision. Though the beginning and sections between the hut and Mt Monroe loop would almost be better using microspikes, these are small segments. We saw several hikers with microspikes or crampons but it is not the best choice. Most of the route has lose granular snow that could be slippery in snowshoes much less boots/microspikes. There were a number of bone jarring post holes along the way. Not huge numbers but some directly on trail that went far down between rocks. Most of the trail was very easily traversed in snowshoes other than slippage on some of the steeper sections. No technical areas. The final ascent up/down Mt Monroe Loop took a little courage for those of us who are somewhat new to winter hiking. (third year) It is deep powdery snow on a steep slope with little established path. Just dig your foot in as deep as you can and go for it... The plateau to the summit was easy - packed snow/ice with just amazing views. FYI - saw a number of skiers out on the trails so watch for them coming down. |
