Our party of five continued to break trail behind two other groups (numbered 3 and 2). Trail condition: 6-8 inches loose powder on top of 2 inch crusty layer (which masquerades as stable until you step on it real hard). Spikes on Clinton Rd, Snowshoes on Edmand's Path. Halfway up Edmands Path half our party switched back to spikes (hard to choose which was tougher!).
About a half mile from the summit, the two parties in front of turned back. We found out why soon enough. The trail entered an open slide area about 60' across, and the thick crusty layer under the powder (at the steep pitch) threatened to send us on a long undesired slide down the mountain with each iffy step. Sadly no one in our party was familiar with the trail and we weren't even sure where the trail led next. We elected to turn back rather than risk injury and endure a long, cold, rescue mission. |
