Hancock Notch and Cedar Brook Trails can be bare booted as long as you stay on trail, but snowshoes were better to keep it packed down and avoid post holing. We went up North Hancock first and good snowshoes are definitely needed on the Hancock Loop Trail! My snowshoes don't have grips around the edge, and I was sliding back more than I was moving forward. Switched over to microspikes but the snow kept balling up underneath which left me with no grip, and I was post holing up to my waist near the top (sorry!). Switched back over to snowshoes near the summit of North, wore them over to South, and back to the car. Snow wasn't great for butt sliding down South Hancock, we made it roughly half way down. Beautiful hike, but the proper gear is definitely needed. |
