There is an excellent snowshoe track here with +/- two inches of semi-consolidated top cover. I wore snowshoes for the entire loop and was very happy with the choice.
I wanted something low key today and figured it was about time to visit this very nice area again as I had not been here in a few years. As I started it dawned on me that I could not recall ever doing this loop counter-clockwise so feeling rebellious I went up the Thumbs Down Trail. The Thumb Mountain outlook was just as I remembered but it seems to me the Skatutakee Mountain outlook is slowly becoming grown in...or maybe my memory just isn't that good. I guess either one is a sign that I am becoming and old man :) At both peaks the surrounding trees and scrub were covered with ice, some of which was melting in the morning sun. I spent a lot of time at each summit just gazing at the beauty and listening to the ice break away - almost sounding like a wind chime. I didn't see anyone else during my hike until I was nearly back to the lot when a family of five was heading up. This one was a really enjoyable way to spend a morning. |
