Comments
Comments: Had a vague goal of Middle Sister but turned around as explained below. At start of hike, I bare-booted because trail was concrete-like, given this week's ice/sleet. Put crampons on just above upper Falls Loop junction. Spikes probably would have worked but I wanted a little practice in crampons. There are some steep sections where some traction is needed since a fall on a side slope would send you a long way. I turned around half-way through second switchback. Slope was slippery and I did not want to commit since I was solo. Hiked down in crampons. Started seeing people coming up as I descended, with a mix of barebooters, spikers and snowshoers. Took a side trip to falls to watch a couple of ice climbers. Trail was getting a bit chewed up as more hikers ascended. Snowshoes are probably advisable going-forward. One final note: No signs of any recent activity on Bolles Trail.
