Comments: Munroe and Washington

Took advantage of a break in the weather. A little bit of calm before the storm. Forecast called for in the clouds, temps in teens, and winds up to 30. Checked out the trail and decided to start in Hillsound Trail Crampon Pro. Snowshoes went for a ride today. Ammo was well packed, nice warm-up to Gem Pool. Then the fun began. There were pretty consistent post holes to 3 -5 " on the side on the packed trail up to Gem Pool. This trail gets a lot of use by skiers. Going up after Gem Pool required kicking toe holds due to the butt sledding and skiers. Snowshoes and microspikes would have been a challenge. No ice to speak off, a couple ice buldges just below Lakes of the Clouds Hut. The door to the dungeon below the hut was actually able to be opened. No snow or ice blocking access. Snow drifts up an over the hut roof. No wind, blue skies, and sunshine at the hut was a pleasant surprise. Up and down Munroe. Winds in the teens at Munroe summit. Back at the hut, in the clouds and glimpses of sun. Pretty well defined and packed snow up Crawford to junction with Westside. Pack snow, windswept snow, and exposed rocks to the summit. Winds were in the 20s at the summit. Gulfside to cog mix of packed snow, windswept snow, and rocks continued to the Cog. Was tempted to go over to Jefferson, but with snow forecast for later, decided to call it good and headed down next to cog. Well packed snow all the way to base station. Saw no-one until going down the cog. Passed about 10 skiers heading up and a couple passed me on their way down. Forgot the butt sled in the car ;<{ Cog snow cat has been up to about El. 5200 on skiers right which made for a nice wide packed surface. The Cog is running to the huts build a few years ago. There was a fire going in the pit, hot cocoa in one of the huts for those that ride the Cog. All and all, a Happy Presidents Day.
