Comments
Comments: This is how I break down this hike. Yes it's 16 miles long but if you are reasonably fit think of it as 14.5 easy miles and 1.5 hard miles. All of this depends on surface conditions, of course and today's were almost ideal. I had micro-spikes on all the way from the start to the base of the Brutus bushwhack where I switched to crampons. They were perfect for ascending the smooth surfaces of the very steep bushwhack. I met Guy and his group of 5 about .5 from the true summit who all had snowshoes on, which accounted for the firm trail today. I kept my crampons on all the way down Brutus and by then the main trail had softened a bit so they remained on until the parking lot.
The entire round trip took 6:10 today with a few brief chats with others on the trail. Only seven of us did Owl's Head today but Lincoln Woods was packed with Pond goers, skiers and groups out for a nice walk. This marks peak #42 in my quest for the solo single-season winter 48. I'll rest up for a day or two because of the storm and also to give my feet a much needed break. I'll try to group the remaining 6 peaks into 2 or 3 hikes. It's a shame I didn't get Bond & West Bond the last time out, that would have made logistics so much easier.
