Mount Weeks (north summit only) from York Pond Road trailhead, party of 2. York Pond Trail from the junction of Bunnell Notch Trail to Kilkenny Ridge Trail was packed out only by a single set of wide skis. No evidence of tracks on Kilkenny Ridge Trail at all. The snow was ~2 feet deep (with deeper drifts) but relatively dense (with a lot of sun-hardened tree-load snow fallen on top of the ground snow) all the way to the summit; we did not sink down very far. Kilkenny Ridge Trail blazing is very sparse and very faded where evident; the deep snow made the course of the trail nearly impossible to find. Fortunately the woods are very open to the summit and it was easy to just make our own route up with occasional course corrections with GPS. Lots of moose activity on Weeks; I saw a moose on the summit from a distance but it was gone quickly. We were thinking of hiking to S. Weeks but given the snow cover decided it would probably be easier to go back and approach it from the Waumbeck side later. |
