Parked at the lot on Route 302 and did the short road run (0.3 miles) up to Zealand Road. Put on snowshoes at Zealand Road and wore them to the summit and back. Zealand Road was pretty well packed, some small sections were not, and some sections had drifts. There was a fresh set of boot prints ahead of me. I saw this hiker on the summit and had a nice chat, he was in spikes. Hale Brook Trail was packed in some sections, soft in some, and drifts in some. The side sloping was in good shape today. On my descent, I passed 3 hikers heading up in spikes, and two in snowshoes. The trail was softer on the descent and getting pretty chopped up from those in spikes, especially the side slope where the sun was now hitting. Glad to be in shoes on the way down. I probably could have switched over to spikes the last mile of Zealand Road, but was in a good groove and did not want to stop to take time to do that. It was -13ºF at the start, but with no wind was a gorgeous day. And super cool to catch the 22º Halo around the sun at the summit. |
