Comments
Comments: We were the only ones on the trail today. Started out on a nice firm surface which eventually became a trail-breaking situation with about 5 inches under a light crust. A barebooter had been up and snow had drifted into the trail so it was very uneven with the snowshoes. Thin down low which meant lots of scratching on undetected rocks. Deeper as we got closer to the cutoff. A couple of icy spots in the trail but enough snow to get around them. Side slabbing was a pain, downhill shoe kept slipping off the trail. It was like walking on a sand dune much of the time, as the snow was so powdery it refused to compact. We went to the summit, such as it is, and descended about 2/10 of a mile hoping to reach the ledges for some views. Forgot how far below the summit they are, so turned around and headed back up. Had to kick in hard to keep from sliding backwards. Been years since we'd been up there, and never in the winter. Didn't go up over the ledges as we had no idea if there might be ice on them, covered with the loose snow. On the cutoff we saw some major ice flows cascading over some huge rocks,so maybe it was prudent to avoid the ledges. It was a nice day out despite all the slipping and ankle turning!
