A make-it-up-as-I-went loop over Whiteface this morning. Snowshoes worn round-trip as they are still very much needed here, especially on the road portions to preserve the groomed conditions.
Up the hiking trail, which had a couple inches of new snow. Evidence of one snowshoer ahead of me, who continued on toward Piper. From the ridge top junction to the summit of Whiteface, the former snowshoe track was filled in, so I broke that out. From the summit, I descended to Durrell Mountain Road past Whiteface's southwest cliffs, breaking through 4-8 in. of fluffy powder. That road was groomed for snowmobile travel, as was a portion of Belknap Mountain Road -- two sledders passed me today. The abandoned stretch of Belknap Mountain Road north of the three-way junction had seen some old snowshoe and ski traffic.
A cold morning, but barely any wind and the having the sun out helped. |
