 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Less than 1/3 full when we arrived. Still only 1/2 full when we left.
Where is everyone?! |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Bemis Bridge's support cable superstructure is sporting corrosion but thankfully held our weight and did not drop us into the Saco. Otherwise, mininal - just the narrow, short log bridge at first minor stream. A good balance test. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
4 blowdowns, easily crossed or ducked beneath. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Three dawgs. "What's that Lassie? Timmy's in trouble again?" |
|
 | Bugs: |
Thankfully none. I'm told that the new bug spray for the White Mtn Boreal Frost Murder Wasp must have been totally ineffective in field surveys. Sadly, no teams have ever reported back. |

Beautiful morning/early afternoon on the trail and summit. Clouds were gathering to the West and North. Big W to the North was totaly obscured by a malstrom of clouds and blowing snow. Some southern Presies were visible. Carrigan and Tripyraminds were visible.
Trail was graciously snowplowed by 2 groups ahead of us. Our 3 amigos did our part on snowshoes as well. Especially in the last 1/4 mile, where there were deep drifts. Went a bit West of the actual trail in the last 1/2 mile. Actually was nice to see more open rock shield areas for a view to the West. Most of the groups behind us were on snowshoes, save for 1 couple and 2 young women with 2 dawgs. I'll leave out the part about "you kids don't know." Sigh, guess I didn't. ;-)
At the summit we experienced a few cold gusts now and again, so we donned balaclavas and goggle. That said, compared to other winter visits to Mt Crawford's summit this one was very tame.
After lunch, we departed the area just south of the summit just as the clouds and winds kicked up snow, and flurries began.
Always a great mountain to visit. Has all the ingredients of a great hike without spending too much time above treeline. Have fun out there! |
