Comments: I kept snowshoes on for this entire root; in many places they were essential, in most they were best, for short stretches it was too boney. I bypassed Monroe on the way back from Franklin and found the side hill difficult; this is the one spot I used an axe. Lots of good snow above treeline. Below treeline trails were in really good shape with great snowshoe tracks.
