Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Well-packed when I got there at 2. Nice & firm up to where the trail enters the woods then a bit more surface powder but still very solid. I started in micro-spikes but switched to crampons halfway up and kept them on the rest of the hike. I always carry snowshoes & had them ready but trail conditions didn't cry out for their use today.

Comments: Drove 90 minutes to do the Osceolas today then realized I forgot my pack! It was 11:30 so I drove 90 minutes all the way back home. Got home, retrieved pack & decided to drive to Cannon to salvage the day. It was in the low 20's at the start and overcast. Got on the trail at 1:50 and headed up in micro-spikes. This hike starts out steep and stays steep for 1.7 miles! Switched to crampons roughly at the steep mid-point and was able to move much more surely as the terrain remained unrelentingly steep. Minimal ice for a few steps in spots but that may change this week as the temps warm up & the freeze/thaw cycle takes over. Even though it was gloomy there were good views at the lookout and on the summit slabs. Made it to the summit in 1:25 and headed down quickly, reaching the lot in just 50 minutes for a total time of 2:15. Crampons were the key for me because spikes didn't have enough grip and it's a cumbersome descent in snowshoes. Don't worry, I never sunk in once and the trail remains in great shape! 4000-footer #29 in my quest for the single-season Winter 48.
